Further afield, Islamorada (about 19 miles/30 km south) is known for sport fishing charters and waterfront restaurants, while the remote Dry Tortugas National Park, roughly 75 miles (120 km) away, is a worthwhile day trip by boat or seaplane for travellers who want reef diving without the crowds. Day-to-day life in Key Largo leans casual — fresh seafood shacks and relaxed dockside dining are the norm, with more formal restaurants found on the other islands.

A car is effectively required, since most attractions — from Pennekamp Park to Islamorada — are spread along US Route 1, which can back up badly on weekends and holidays.
